Jesus and Melisa Hernandez
Jesus Hernandez came with his family to the United State at the age of nine. He graduated from Wenatchee HS and went on to Washington State University to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Business and later completed a Masters in Public Administration from the University of Washington.
In his professional career, he has made successful contributions in the areas of Public Education, Employment and Training for farm workers, financial planning and investments and in the last fifteen years he has a leader and innovator in the healthcare sector. Currently, he is the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) for Family Health Centers, a health system with six medical clinics, five dental clinics, and behavioral health and a WIC program in Okanogan County.
Jesus has also had a distinguished civic and public service career with many “firsts” along the way. He was the first Latino to serve on the Wenatchee School Board where he served for 19 years championing initiatives benefiting all students but especially disadvantaged students. He was the first Latino appointed by two state governors to the Higher Education Board of the state of Washington where he served for nine years and chaired the board two years.
Jesus has been a recognized leader at the state and local level having led numerous initiatives in the Wenatchee area. He has received numerous recognition for his accomplishments on the school board, higher education, services to farm workers, leadership development and community engagement. Among the many awards, Jesus received the distinguished Jefferson Award for Public Service from the state of Washington…this is considered the Nobel Prize for Public Service and is awarded at the state and national level. At his retirement from the Wenatchee School Board, Mr. Rufus Woods, editor of the Wenatchee World called Jesus “a founding father” for the current, more integrated Wenatchee Community. Jesus and his wife Melissa have raised two sons, Mikael (currently a senior at the University of Washington) and Julian a senior at Wenatchee High School. Jesus highlights that his professional and personal success was made possible because of the amazing life partner he has had in his wife of 25 years, Melissa Hernandez.
Jesús Hernández vino con su familia a los Estados Unidos a la edad de 9 años. Se graduó de la preparatoria de Wenatchee y asistió a la Universidad del Estado de WA donde se graduó con su diplomado en Negocios más tarde completo su maestría en Administración Pública en la Universidad de WA.
En su carrera profesional ha hecho contribuciones exitosas en las áreas de Educación publica, empleo, entrenamiento a trabajadores agrícolas, planeación financiera e inversiones y en los últimos 15 años ha sido líder e innovador en el sector de salud. Actualmente es el Jefe Ejecutivo de Centros de Salud para la familia, un sistema con 6 clínicas, 5 clínicas dentales y programa de salud de comportamiento y WIC en el condado de Okanogan.
Jesús se ha distinguido en las áreas de servicio cívico y público. Él fué el primer latino en servir la mesa directiva del distrito de Wenatchee ha apoyado 19 iniciativas que benefician estudiantes especialmente los más necesitados. El fué el primer latino al que dos gobernadores lo identificaron para la mesa directiva de Educación superior del estado de WA. Donde sirvió por 9 años y guió por dos años.
Jesús es un reconocido líder a nivel local y estatal dirigiendo múltiples iniciativas en el área de Wenatchee. Ha recibido varios reconocimientos por sus logros en la mesa directiva, educación superior, servicio a los trabajadores agrícolas , liderazgo en desarrollo e involucramiento en la comunidad. Entre sus reconocimientos Jesús recibió El certificado Jefferson por servicio público del estado de WA. Esto es considerado el Premio nobel del servicio público y se dá a nivel estatal y nacional. A su retiro de la mesa directiva de Wenatchee El Señor Rufus Woods, editor del periódico del Wenatchee World, lo llamo “un padre fundador, de la actual y más integrada Comunidad de Wenatchee.” Jesús y su esposa Melissa criaron dos hijos Mikael ( actualmente uno estudia el ultimo grado en la universidad de WA) y Julián un estudiante senior de la Preparatoria de Wenatchee. Jesús hace hincapié que su éxito personal y profesional fue posible gracias a su increíble compañera de vida que tuvo en su esposa por más de 25 años Melissa Hernández.
<strong>Melissa Hernandez bio:</strong>
Melissa Hernandez came to Wenatchee as an exchange student from Panama in 1986. She later returned in 1991 when she married Jesus Hernandez and began her distinguished service and career in the Wenatchee Valley. She completed her Bachelor’s Degree in public education and became a certified teacher working in the Wenatchee School District. Despite her love for teaching children, she discovered she could have a greater impact by working on parent involvement and student leadership development. Melissa soon became the main resource and advocate for disadvantaged students and their families in the Wenatchee School District and the entire community.
Melissa was known for her commitment to excellence and “getting things done” whether organizing the annual Mariachi Festival or connecting someone to a job opportunity or solving a life challenge. She always found a solution.
Melissa was a recognized leader at the state and local level. Along with her husband Jesus, they were awarded the 2013 Civil Rights and Social Justice Award by the City of Wenatchee. In 2012, Melissa was named the Civic Educator of the Year by the Washington State Legislature. Melissa passed on July 15, 2016 after a courageous fight with breast cancer. Over 1000 people from the Latino and Anglo community came to celebrate her life at her funeral service…a reflection of her work and passion for integrating our whole community. She will be remembered for her lasting impact on many families and multiple generations of students whose lives she touched over 25 years.

Ella después regreso en 1991 y se casó con Jesús Hernández y fue entonces que comenzó su distinguido servicio y carrera en el Valle de Wenatchee. Completó su diplomado en educación pública y se certificó como maestra trabajando para el Distrito de Wenatchee.
A pesar de su amor por la enseñanza a los niños, descubrió que podía tener más impacto trabajando en el involucramiento de padres y el desarrollo de liderazgo estudiantil. Melissa se convirtió en el principal recurso y abogante de estudiantes en desventaja y sus familias en la comunidad del Distrito de Wenatchee
Melisa fue conocida por su compromiso con la excelencia ella “Hacia las cosas” ya fuera organizando el festival del Mariachi anualmente o conectando a alguien con una oportunidad de trabajo o resolviendo un desafío en la vida. Ella siempre encontró la solución.
Melisa fue una líder reconocida a nivel local y estatal. Junto con su esposo Jesús recibieron el premio De Derechos civiles y Justicia Social en el 2013 por la ciudad de Wenatchee. En 2012 Melissa fue nombrada la educadora cívica del ano por la legislatura del estado de WA. Melissa falleció el 15 de Julio del 2016 después de pelear contra el cáncer de mama. Más de 1000 personas Latinas y anglosajonas se reunieron a celebrar su vida en el servicio de su funeral. Una reelección de su trabajo y pasión por la integración de toda la comunidad. Ella será recordada por su impacto a muchas familias y por múltiples generaciones de estudiantes quienes ella toco sus vidas por más de 25 años.

Katie Pauly
Katie was born in Seattle, WA, the second of five children. She learned Spanish in High School and studied in Madrid, Spain for a year in College. She has always loved speaking Spanish and developed a deep enjoyment of the Latino culture and community. She has lived in Wenatchee for the past 27 years and has appreciated developing connections with Latinos as friends, students, colleagues, neighbors and co-workers.
Katie held leadership positions with Columbia School PTA, Wenatchee High School Booster Club, the Wenatchee Valley YMCA, Community Foundation of North Central Washington, is a CASA Volunteer and assists with Special Projects at Northern Fruit Company. She also teaches Pilates several days a week, including a class in Spanish at Golds Gym.
Katie and Doug Pauly have been married for 28 years and are the parents of Chelan and Skye (age 24) and Jace (age 19) Pauly.
Katie held leadership positions with Columbia School PTA, Wenatchee High School Booster Club, the Wenatchee Valley YMCA, Community Foundation of North Central Washington, is a CASA Volunteer and assists with Special Projects at Northern Fruit Company. She also teaches Pilates several days a week, including a class in Spanish at Golds Gym.

Doug Head
Douglas Head was honored at the Fiesta Mexicanas celebration in 2011 for his long term support for the Latino community in our area. This support involved significantly increasing social support and mental health services to our Spanish speaking population and aggressively hiring Latino direct service staff members in the Wenatchee office of Children’s Home Society of Washington
Doug served as the Regional Director of the Wenatchee office of CHSW for almost 30 years. He is a Spokane native, a graduate of Gonzaga University and a passionate follower of Zags basketball. He graduated with a master’s degree from the University of Washington School of Social Work in 1975.
Doug’s interest in other cultures began with his three years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Afghanistan.
Under Doug’s leadership, Children’s Home Society has built a reputation for community collaboration and quality service. In 2009 he received the Trail Blazer Award from North Central Washington Camp Fire.
Doug and his wife, Lyn, also a social worker, have three daughters, Katie, Connie and Lauren, and two grandchildren, as well as their Afghan student daughters, Geeta and Sadaf.
Doug retired in early 2013. Doug remains committed to our community through various volunteer efforts, including the Wenatchee Kiwanis Club, Columbia Valley Community Health and the St. Vincent de Paul Society food bank. He and Lyn have continued their interests in other cultures by traveling in Vietnam, Turkey and Peru and have trips scheduled to Europe, India and Africa in the near future.

Ismael Vivanco
Ismael Vivanco moved to the United States as a young child and worked as a migrant in the fields until the age of 16. These experiences taught him the value of hard work and more notably the importance of education. After graduating from high school, he continued his education by attending different colleges and universities.
He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish from Western Washington University, Master’s degree in Education and Teacher Certification from Heritage University. Dr. Vivanco has studied abroad in Mexico, and at the University of Salamanca, Spain. He received his superintendent credentials and Doctorate of Education from Washington State University.
After spending 20 years working for the North Central ESD, he now serves as the Superintendent for Entiat and Palisades School districts. He currently serves as Regional President for the Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA).
Dr. Vivanco is very proud of his Mexican heritage and is committed to always supporting and giving back to the community. He has been involved in many activities like:
* Mariachi Northwest Festival
* Apple Blossom Festival
* Student Career Fairs
* Binational Teacher Exchange Program with Mexico and Spain
* School Supply Giveaways for students, and
* Many regional, state and National organizations

Estas experiencias le enseñaron el valor del trabajo pesado y más notable la importancia de la educación. Después de graduarse de la preparatoria, continuó su educación asistiendo a diferentes colegios y universidades.
Recibió su licenciatura en español de la Universidad de Western Washington, Maestría en Educación y certificación del maestro de la Universidad de Heritage. El Dr. Vivanco ha estudiado en México, y en la Universidad de Salamanca, España. He recibido sus credenciales de Superintendente y Doctorado en Educación de la Universidad Estatal de Washington.
Después de pasar 20 años trabajando para el Distrito de Servicios Escolares Central del Norte, ahora sirve como el Superintendente para los distritos escolares de Entiat y Palisades. Actualmente se desempeña como Presidente Regional de la Asociación de Administradores de Escuelas de Washington (WASA).
Dr. Vivanco está muy orgulloso de su herencia mexicana y se ha comprometido a apoyar siempre y retribuir a la comunidad. Ha estado involucrado en muchas actividades como:

Garn Christensen
Fiestas Mexicanas recognized Garn’s leadership in education, dedication and service to our diversified community in 2012.
Garn Christensen grew up in Utah and Idaho. He was homeschooled during his teen years and graduated early from Nebo Alternative High School in Spanish Fork, Utah. He paid his own way through college and had several jobs during those years including working on cattle and sheep ranches in Utah and Eastern Nevada, rowing rafts as a guide on the Colorado and Green Rivers, construction, and working as a burn/trauma technician while attending the University of Utah.
He earned his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Utah. His first job in education was teaching in the turkey farm country of central Utah. From there he was hired as the only-employee for a remote one-room school district in the mountains of Idaho. This job also included setting up a community ambulance association that still exists today. During this time, he earned a Master’s Degree from The College of Idaho and was hired for his principal job in a school surrounded by potato farms on the Idaho side of the Teton Mountains.
He came to Washington in 1992 and spent 11 years in the ski town of Chewelah about an hour north of Spokane. For the first six years he was a principal. Evenings and summers he drove to Washington State University in Spokane and Pullman to earn his Superintendent certification and then started work on a Ph.D.
In 1998, the Chewelah Board asked him to serve as superintendent. Five years later he moved to the Olympic Peninsula and worked 4 years as the Sequim Superintendent. In 2007, he moved back to the east side of the state to become the fifth superintendent in Eastmont School District in 8 years.
He is in his 10th year as Superintendent in Eastmont. He also takes a vacation day each month during the school year and is an adjunct professor at Washington State University in their superintendent certification program. One of his traditions as a leader is to hand deliver paychecks. This allows him to visit every classroom every month and meet all employees face to face. With over 600 full and part-time employees, it takes a full day every school month and equals a 9 mile walk.
When not working, he enjoys outdoor activities, music, and spending time with this family.

Susan Feil
Susan began studying Spanish early on because she had an interest in people and cultures, especially from Mexico. She travelled extensively and enjoyed spending time with new friends both here and in Mexico. This led her to teach English as a Second Language for Wenatchee Valley College. It became a passion to help people learn English in order to be successful members of our community. Many of her first students have become leaders in the Wenatchee Valley, which has made Susan very proud. Susan has been a teacher for many years at Eastmont Junior High and is now excited about encouraging second generation students. Her passion remains to help her students pursue their goals and follow their dreams while always staying proud of their heritage.

She is involved in United Way, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and currently serves as Chair for The Coalition for Children & Families of NCW. She was awarded Business Woman of the Year for 2011 and Campfire Trail Blazer Award in 2005. Her efforts have been a positive influence in building a safe and healthy community and she continues to be a role model and mentor for prevention professionals throughout our region.

Ramon Rivera
Wenatchee High School Mariachi Program Director
During his teaching career, Mr. Rivera has received numerous awards and has been recognized as being an innovative leader and pioneer in cultural arts. In 2001, he was featured in the Los Angeles Times article “Oxnard Mariachi Music Teacher Help Youth Discover Roots”. Later, he received the 2003 “El Concilio Del Condado de Ventura Latino Leadership Award for Cultural Arts” and the “Mexican American Political Forum of Ventura County Diego de Barboza Musical Excellence Award”.
After earning his Bachelor of Arts Degree at California State University in 2003, Mr. Rivera began teaching music full time in Southern California where he began several mariachi programs in Oxnard, California. He has since moved to North Central Washington where he is currently the Wenatchee School District’s Mariachi Program Director, overseeing 14 classes district-wide with a total enrollment of about 300 students. Mr. Rivera also teaches mariachi full-time at Wenatchee High & Pioneer Middle School. Mr. Rivera is 2014 Washington State Jefferson Award Winner.
In 2009, Mr. Rivera received the “Torch-Bearer World Harmony Award” and “Human & Civil Rights Award” from the Washington Education Association. In 2007, he received the Numerica School Champion Award given to one teacher whose students believe “goes above and beyond”. Mr. Rivera has been given the Outstanding Educator of the year from the Fiesta Mexicana’s of Wenatchee. Under his direction, in 2012 the Mariachi Program was named recipient of the Washington State Golden Apple Award by KCTS 9 Seattle, and this year Rivera was recipient of the Jefferson Award — the highest award for public service in the state — because of he “inspires kids to stay in school…inspires their dreams and their thirst for education.
Mariachi Huenachi Wenatchee,Washington
Mariachi Huenachi is nationally recognized Mariachi Music Program, That has been featured nationally on FOX ,ABC, NBC,PBS, Univision, Despierta America,Latina Magazine and on the CBS Evening News.This high school group has earned a reputation as the best high school mariachi in the State of Washington, performing annually at dozens of events and festivals in and out of state such as Seattle Seahawks Games,Seattle Sounders Games, Orcas Island, Washington State Fair, Portland State University, Montana State University-Northern, University of Idaho and been invited multiple times to perform at the State Capitol for Governor Inslee. Mariachi Huenachi was featured on TVW, with their own half-hour documentary special.
Mariachi Huenachi has shared the stage with some of the best Mariachis in the world, Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán, Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea and Mariachi Sol de México de José Hernández. Mariachi Huenachi has open for artists such as Joan Sebastian,Marco Antonio Solis, Sebastien de la Cruz, Beatriz Adriana,Gloria Trevi and Los Tigres Del Norte.Mariachi Huenachi has had the honor of performing for civil rights leader Dolores Huerta and comedian George Lopez.

Rev. Argemiro Orozco
Father Argemiro Orozco was born in Celia Risaralda, Columbia on September 14th 1963. He pursued post-secondary education at El Seminario Mayor in Columbia where he obtained two degrees in Philosophy and Theology. Orozco served as a volunteer at the Great Pastor Women’s Prison and at the Rosa Virginia Middle School in Pereira, Columbia.
In 1991, he immigrated to the United States in 1991 and attended Central Washington University where he studied E.S.L. Orozco became an ordained Deacon at San Pablo Cathedral in Yakima on January 2nd, 1992. On June 5th, 1992 he became an ordained priest at St. Joseph Cathedral in Kennewick, Washington where he served as priest for three years. His mission in serving continued 3 years at Our Lady of Fatima in Moses Lake, 10 years at St Aloysius in Toppenish, and pastor at Holy Apostles for the past 8yrs. He also served as the Director of the Hispanic Ministry at the Yakima Diocese.
Argemiro Orozco is very loved by the Hispanic community for his tireless, selfless personality. His leadership and humility is an example to us. He is well known as the Columbian with the biggest Mexican heart. Our Fiestas Mexicanas Committee honors and recognizes the hard work and trajectory of Father Argemiro Orozco for his kindness, involvement, commitment and effort in social justice and equality for all. Dr. Jorge Chacón and his wife Alma Chacón are two people that have contributed and continue to contribute much to our community. Wherever you see them, both represent and demonstrate the best of our values and culture. Both are always willing to assist in community development, community issues impacting the Latino community, and community celebrations where you will see them dancing to cumbia, merengue banda y nortena music.
They are both leaders of CAFÉ (Community for the Advancement of Family Education), a non-profit group that advocates for developing leadership, civic participation, family education, and provides 6 scholarships to students in North Central Washington each year.
Their most recent activities are advocating for a Just Comprehensive Immigration reform and in establishing the North Central Washington Immigration Reform roundtable to provide information on immigration reform. You will often hear them motivating students with “Si Se Puede!”

Jon Magnus
Jon Magnus learned the value of serving others by observing his parent’s example. As a teacher at Wenatchee High School , he strives daily to emphasize the importance of reaching out and extending a helping hand to others. He firmly believes that we are all in this experience called life together, and that solidarity, love and compassion are the keys to a brighter future.
In 2003, Jon Magnus and Susan Ballinger co-founded the Wenatchee High School Mentor Program for College-bound Hispanic students. This program has now served _ 397 students many of them have pursue higher education and continues to provide guidance and inspiration for those with goals and dreams of pursuing a college education. As advisor for the Wenatchee High School Interact Club, Jon enjoys working side-by-side with students to fulfill both local and international community service activities. He loves his job as an educator and the privilege of making a positive difference in the lives of others. This is why our Fiestas Mexicanas Team awards The Humanitarian Extraordinaire award to Jon Magnus.

Sharon Osborne
Sharon Osborne has a remarkable legacy in the field of children and family services. She is directly responsible for creating one of the most well-respected and largest nonprofit children’s organizations in the United States. As president/CEO of Children’s Home Society of Washington for 25 years, she has brought lasting, positive changes for children in Wenatchee and throughout Washington state and beyond.
Over the years, she has remained passionate and dedicated to working with diverse populations from all cultures and walks of life to develop innovative solutions that better support children and their families. As a national and state children’s’ advocate she has worked directly with legislators, public policy decision makers to craft national legislation and state laws that impact ALL Washington’s and our nation’s children. She has and continues to remain a strong voice against children being separated from their families at our nation’s southern border.
As she transitions from her position as President/CEO of Children’s Home Society of Washington’s CEO, we want to thank Sharon for dedicating her life to children and their families. Sharon Osborne tiene un legado notable en el campo de servicios para niños y familias. A medida que ella teniendo una transición como presidenta / CEO de Children's Home Society of Washington queremos agradecer a Sharon por dedicar su vida a los niños y sus familias.
